Nurturing Excellence in Education

Students raising their hands, offering answers to their teacher

Welcome to the Primary Department at Logos School, where we take pride in fostering academic, social, and moral development in our students. Our commitment is to explore and unlock the full potential of each child, preparing them for a future of success.

Academic

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum of England, adapted to suit the unique needs of life in Cyprus, the school ethos and our multicultural environment. Students engage in a diverse range of subjects, including Mathematics, English, Science, Computing, History, Geography, Bible Knowledge, Music, Physical Education, and Art.

Greek Language Education: At Logos Primary School, we recognise the significance of Greek language education in our multicultural environment. To cater to the diverse needs of our students, we offer Greek language classes at two proficiency levels.

  1. First Language Speakers: For native Greek speakers, our curriculum aligns with the Cyprus Ministry of Education curriculum, ensuring a comprehensive and structured approach to language learning. Students follow a curriculum designed to enhance their language skills and cultural understanding.
  2. Greek as a Second Language: Understanding the challenges faced by non-native speakers, we provide Greek language classes at a foreign language proficiency level.

Through our tailored Greek language programs, we aim to create an inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive, regardless of their language background. These language classes contribute to our commitment to holistic development by fostering linguistic proficiency and cultural appreciation.

Celebrating Success: Recognising and celebrating success is an integral part of our school’s ethos. Our team points system serves as a mechanism for rewarding children within their respective teams for exemplary work and behaviour, fostering a positive learning environment that encourages collaborative efforts. The school is divided into four teams: Troodos, Akamas, Kouris, and Amathus, with students earning team points for their accomplishments, which are tallied regularly.

Every week, during the Friday Congratulations Assembly, we announce the team with the highest accumulated points, and the team members are duly rewarded with a prize. Additionally, we place great emphasis on acknowledging individual student achievements. Those selected for commendation receive a special invitation to join the Principal for an exclusive gathering at the ‘V.I.P. celebration,’ where they can enjoy snacks and juice in celebration of their accomplishments. This practice further reinforces our commitment to fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment that values both team collaboration and individual excellence.

Inclusive Learning Environment: Logos School embraces diversity with students from over 30 different nationalities and provides comprehensive support for learning English as an additional language. We strive to promote an inclusive learning environment, while recognising that our resources may have limitations, especially when catering to the educational needs of children with special requirements.

Holistic Development: Our commitment to fostering holistic development goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. At Logos Primary School, we organise Focus Weeks and Themed Days to inspire our students and help them develop a diverse range of skills. Through our curriculum and various clubs that run during our second term, including Craft, Sports, Board Games, Art, Choir, Bible, students have the opportunity to develop academically, socially, emotionally, physically, morally, and spiritually.

These themed events and clubs not only supplement academic learning but also provide a platform for students to discover and develop their talents in various areas. By incorporating diverse experiences into our curriculum, we aim to instil a lifelong love for learning and encourage well-rounded development in our students.

Curriculum Delivery

We take teaching seriously and actively pursue research backed teaching methods that have been tried and tested in the classroom. In today’s environment, balancing the use of technology and traditional methods in a way that meets the needs of all our students is important.Grade 3 History pot making

Phonics – Learning to read and write are fundamental skills that start in Pre-School at Logos. Our students join primary already able to read and write phonetically. In Grades 1 & 2, Phonics development continues with the addition of spelling practice and the aim of ensuring students are free-readers by the time they reach Grade 4.

English – Our curriculum for English is delivered through the medium of several age appropriate novels which students study throughout the year developing their comprehension and writing skills as they go. Rather than short extracts in textbooks, this in-depth approach allows us to be ultra-flexible with individual student progress, whilst providing a consistent anchor of thoughts and ideas for the class to follow. Students for whom English is a second language and require additional support receive this in the provision of some specialist Second Language support lessons to boost their English during the school day.

Mathematics – Our mathematics lessons in Primary are very diverse and interactive. Along with teacher lead direction, students are encouraged to interact with number, shapes and mathematical principles in a journey of discovery. Differentiated worksheets accompany this learning, providing scaffolded steps on a progressive journey, which are then added to the students file to document their progress.

Other areas – through the rest of the curriculum we seek to engage our students in practical and project based learning, peer-collaboration, teacher instruction – all planned and directed by teachers to build a positive learning journey. Our teachers have access to class-sets of tablets for some online interactive activities, numerous class based resources and interactive whiteboards to really allow learning to come to life.

Parental Involvement

Regular reports detailing each child's progress are provided, and parents are encouraged to schedule appointments or make email contact with teachers at any time. We believe that a strong partnership between school and parents is essential for a child's success.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

Logos School also have strong links with Ambassadors football, which is a football club run independently from the school. The price of Ambassadors football is separate from the school fees.

Curriculum Questions

Please see the questions and answers below to give you a clearer idea of how our Primary curriculum works.

Special Educational Needs

Logos School is not a Special Needs School. We have a Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator, who is responsible for the co-ordination of specific/limited provision to support pupils with mild SEN. We do not offer 1:1 support for students with Special Educational Needs. The SENCO will support teachers and parents to identify any additional learning needs that the students might exhibit, and advise how to proceed with diagnosis procedures. Logos offers a small, welcoming environment in which students with some learning challenges can thrive; as we are able to provide only limited support – it is important to us that we are open about the level of help that is available.

For students with a confirmed diagnosis, test and exam access arrangement can be provided when in line with school policies, Ministry of Education expectations and external exam regulations set by UK JCQ, Cambridge International & Pearson, Edexcel.

If you are considering Logos School and you know or suspect your child will need additional support, please get in touch to have an open and honest conversation about whether Logos School is the right environment to allow your child to reach their potential.

What level of English is Required?

It is not unusual for students to join Logos School in lower Primary with very little English. Students are only permitted to communicate in English around the school, and our in-take is very international, so this happens naturally. The children play – speaking in English and often develop their skills incredibly quickly.

As students enter older classes, a stronger command of English Language is required to be able to cope with the curriculum being delivered entirely in English (other than Greek). Prospective students may be refused entry if their oral understanding is insufficient for daily learning. English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching is available for some students. Previous reports, Interview and Entrance tests are used to establish English Language proficiency prior to places being offered.

Do students need an iPad/tablet for school?

No! Students use pen and paper for the greater majority of their learning. We still believe this is the most effective method the majority of the time. Teachers can book class sets of tablets when online or electronic learning activities will be beneficial, and they have access to a computer lab when needed.

Do students need to buy textbooks?

Not really! Students are required to buy several reading books / novels that their English studies are based on each year. There are some subscriptions and required resources but not a large number of textbooks to buy. Optional revision resources may be purchased at the recommendation of the school.
