Our Secondary Curriculum

Our secondary students build on their previous learning, achieving great academic and personal success. Graduates leave with skills, qualities, and qualifications that open up a world of opportunities. Learn more about our commitment to their future.

Academic

Our secondary curriculum is a hybrid of the National Curriculum of England, and that of the Ministry of Education in Cyprus. Logos School maintains a high registration with the Ministry as a ‘Similar Type’ School, meaning our curriculum meets parallel standards – with small variations, the most notable of which is the language of instruction: English rather than Greek.

MOEC

Students at Logos graduate in 12th Grade with their Ministry of Education stamped ‘Apolytirion’ – and the greater majority move on to university at this stage. Running parallel to this, students can also gain their IGCSE’s and AS qualifications giving them stand-out qualifications recognised by many and required by some universities across the world.

In the local school system, student move from Gymnasium (lower secondary) to Lyceum (upper secondary) schools at the transition point between Grades 9 and 10. At this point in their school journey at Logos, some subject areas in Grade 10 become optional, and the curriculum is mostly directed by IGCSE content. A similar selection process happens as students move into Grade 12, selecting their final classes that will appear on their Apolytirion – and if they wish, which AS exams they will take. You can find more details below about what subjects are available in which classes.

German award winner

Mathematics – the programme at Logos for Mathematics is particularly advanced allowing our students to meet the Apolytirion goals by the end of 12th Grade – and covering the full A-Level syllabus.

Academic Performance – whilst most people would first point to our Christian heritage and pastoral care, Logos students have an excellent track record of academic success. Our students have consistently won ‘Top in Cyprus awards’ across the range of subjects areas for IGCSE, AS and A-Level, and in 2023 one student received an award for ‘Top in the World’ for AS English General Paper.

Grade 13 – some students remain at Logos for an optional class after Graduation. This class allows the completion of A-Levels in some subjects in which they have not already been completed. Typically students who take this option are with us part-time and complete 2 A-Levels in order to gain access to reputable universities in the UK, Germany, or the Netherlands.

Our Grades 7 - 9 Curriculum
The subjects we offer for key stage 3 include:    Mathematics (core and extended) ; English Language and Literature (combined for grades 7 and 8; separate courses for grade 9) ; English Second Language ; Science (combined Biology, Chemistry and Physics for grades 7 and 8; separate courses for grade 9) ; Greek (First Language and GFL) ; Geography ; History ; ICT ; Art ; Biblical Studies ; PE ; PSHE;
Our Grade 10 & 11 Curriculum
Students at this level have the opportunity to work towards gaining IGCSE qualifications at the end of grade 11. The courses take two years to complete, so the options students choose in grade 10 continue through grade 11. At Logos School we use both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel examining boards, depending on the subject, which is indicated below. The IGCSEs serve as a vital qualification for further education and employment, assessing students' knowledge, skills, and understanding. The curriculum emphasises both academic and practical aspects, encouraging a well-rounded education. Students have the opportunity to explore their interests and make informed choices for future academic paths. While we offer a variety of options, students may not always be able to take every subject they want due to the choices available in each lesson slot.  Required subjects:  English Language and English Literature or ESL (Cambridge) ; Mathematics extended or Mathematics core (Pearson Edexel); Bible Studies (Cambridge: to be completed in Grade 12) ; PE (not an exam subject) ; PSHE (not an exam subject) ; Optional subjects include:  Biology (Cambridge) ; Chemistry (Cambridge) ; Physics (Cambridge) ; Greek (CEFR); Geography (Cambridge) ; History (Cambridge) ; Business Studies (Cambridge) ; ICT (Cambridge) ; Art and Design (Pearson Edexcel) ; GCSE PE (Cambridge) ; Cambridge website https://www.cambridgeinternational.org/ Pearson website https://www.pearsonqualification.com/  Available on request there is an options booklet that provides details about each course.
Our Grade 12 Curriculum
Students at this level have the option to follow one of two routes or a combination of them. Moving forward from IGCSE courses, students can take courses based on the AS & A-Level syllabi as set by Cambridge Assessment and Pearson Edexcel for the AS classes, providing they meet the entry requirements. Alternatively, they can enrol in Apolytirion classes, which are equivalent to other Apolytirion classes in Public Schools. In addition, students can take a combination of the two types of courses. All students who have passed Grade 7 – 11 and the courses studied in Grade 12 will be awarded an Apolytirion Certificate equivalent to those issued by Cyprus Public Schools if all the Ministry of Education criteria are met.  Required subjects:  Bible Studies (option to take the Cambridge IGCSE exam in grade 12) ; PE ; PSHE ; Optional subjects: AS level   English (Cambridge) ; Maths (Pearson Edexcel); Biology (Cambridge) ; Chemistry (Pearson Edexcel); Physics (Cambridge); Greek (Cambridge/CEFR);  Geography (Cambridge);  History (Cambridge); Business Studies (Cambridge) ; ICT (Cambridge) ; Art and Design (Pearson Edexcel); Optional subjects: Apolytirion  Apolytirion Maths; Applied ICT; Sport and Exercise Science; Psychology; Accounting; Art and Design; Cambridge website https://www.cambridgeinternational.org/ Available on request: there is an options booklet that provides details about each course.
Our Grade 13 Curriculum - Optional
A-Level courses are available to Grade 13 when there is sufficient demand to run classes. Students who have been successful in AS courses may be able to continue into Grade 13 to complete their A-Levels. These are generally required for University entry in England, Germany and the Netherlands among others. Logos School students graduate at the end of Grade 12, so completing A-Levels in Grade 13 is therefore optional and dependent on aspirations for further education, success at AS and demand; Class sizes when they run are therefore extremely preferential.

Parental Involvement & Reporting

Secondary students at Logos receive progress reports at the end of the first and second term, detailing scores, effort and informing parents of how the student is performing in each subject and providing next steps for development. In addition, an end of year transcript provides the grades for the year and promotion status of each student.

Twice during the year, parent's evenings are arranged face-to-face in order to maintain good contact and help parents understand progress made.

Each student has a form tutor who will follow them through the school, providing consistent care, nurture, home contact and mentorship. Parents can direct any questions to the form tutor who will liase with the rest of the staff and raise any concerns or questions with parents as the need arises. Parents also have access to staff email addresses, in order to directly communicate if there is a subject specific question to ask.
Test grades are published on our Parent Portal, SchoolBase - so parents are always in touch with the learning journey.

Curriculum Questions

Please see the questions and answers below to give you a clearer idea of how our curriculum works.

Special Educational Needs

Logos School is not a Special Needs School. We have a Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator, who is responsible for the co-ordination of specific/limited provision to support pupils with mild SEN. We do not offer 1:1 support for students with Special Educational Needs. The SENCO will support teachers and parents to identify any additional learning needs that the students might exhibit, and advise how to proceed with diagnosis procedures. Logos offers a small, welcoming environment in which students with some learning challenges can thrive; as we are able to provide only limited support – it is important to us we are open about the level of help that is available.

For students with a confirmed diagnosis, test and exam access arrangement can be provided when in line with school policies, Ministry of Education expectations and external exam regulations set by UK JCQ, Cambridge International & Pearson, Edexcel.

If you are considering Logos School and you know or suspect your child will need additional support, please get in touch to have an open and honest conversation about whether Logos School is the right environment to allow your child to reach their potential.

What level of English is Required?

Students need a strong command of English to be able to cope with the curriculum being delivered entirely in English (other than Greek). Prospective students may be refused entry if their oral understanding is insufficient for daily learning. English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching is available for some students. Previous reports, Interview and Entrance tests are used to establish English Language proficiency prior to places being offered.

As the academic standard and specialist language increases through the secondary school – the standard required for entry increases. We assess this on a case-by-case basis when considering prospective entrants.

Do students need an iPad/tablet for school?

No! Students use pen and paper for the greater majority of their learning. We still believe this is the most effective method the majority of the time. Teachers can book class sets of tablets when online or electronic learning activities will be beneficial, and they have access to a computer lab when needed.

Do students need to buy textbooks?

Yes! For most subjects, students are required to have their own copies of the text book. This provides an excellent set of notes for revision, and students often annotate their textbooks in lessons. Textbooks are sold via the school at preferential rates as we buy and ship in bulk.

What about calculators?

Very specific calculators are required for Mathematics – and we systematically teach students how to use them and get the most benefit from their calculator. These are included in our ‘book list’ and invoiced to parents. There is an option to ‘upgrade’ to the graphical calculator for our advanced mathematicians from Grade 9 upwards. Students will be offered this option. If you were thinking about sourcing your own, please check with us first that your choice is compatible.

Are GCSE's, AS & A-Level external exams compulsory?

No! Students can opt in to take these exams which are charged separately. They are however often very beneficial to students especially considering university entry, and we provide careers lessons, advice and information evenings to help you make the right decisions for your child’s journey.
